Food Scarcity In India
Every country across the globe has been affected by COVID over this past year, and India is no exception. With at least two-thirds of the population having already been living in poverty prior to 2020, the economic impact of COVID has all but devastated the nation.
When COVID showed up, India shut down. Suddenly, entire villages in remote areas were, and still are, without food. Typically, rural villages are home to many laborers who travel to larger cities for work to provide for their families. In 2020, many businesses in these cities closed, leaving the rural laborers without work and their families without food. Consequently, suicide rates have skyrocketed since the early months of 2020.
Surely, the need seems overwhelming, but we cannot sit back and do nothing. When we saw what was happening, we rolled up our sleeves and got to work. Through our connections with many rural villages, World Mission 360 has organized a Food Kit initiative to provide food for rural families who are facing starvation. Our team purchases food from a wholesale supplier and packs individual kits, which feed an entire family for up to one week. Working with local village chiefs, locations are determined, and our team is onsite for regular Food Kit distributions. In addition to offering physical food, we use these opportunities to offer spiritual food, providing hope and help where there otherwise is none.
The Food Kit program has been overwhelmingly popular and will continue beyond the COVID pandemic, as the need is so great. Our prayer is that we will continue to meet physical and spiritual needs, and that India’s brightest days would be ahead of her.
